Does Missions Work? Worldwide Evangelical Explosion from 1960 to 2010

Ever wonder if that $10, $50, $100/month actually does anything? Since WWII, thousands of missionaries have left family and language to make a home in places like S. America, Africa, and East-Asia.

These two images* confirm the fruit of their radical sacrifices for Jesus… and point us toward the coming fruit of current ambassadors for Jesus Christ scattered across the globe:

Each blue dot represents 50,000 Evangelicals

Each blue dot represents 50,000 Evangelicals

And here are the two photos layered one on top of the other… take a minute and breathe in the radical changes in S. America, Africa, China, and S. Korea:

QUESTION: Is every blue dot 100% accurate?

ANSWER: I’m sure many of the blue dots, as individuals, are the subject of much debate. No one, however, can question the overall explosion… especially the movement of the center of evangelicalism from Europe and N. America to S. America, sub-Saharan Africa, and East Asia.

QUESTION: Do all of these dots have a true comprehension of the “evangile” (gospel), or are there other aberrant movements and theologies mixed in?

ANSWER: Many different radically pentecostal and prosperity-oriented theologies are most likely somewhat mixed into these results. However, again, one cannot deny the overall movement taking place. For more info, check out the Mission, Vision, and Ethos of Operation World.

Links and Videos: Pray for the beautiful Japanese people… rather than faceless victims

Andrew's Japanese friend Mika

As we hear more and more about the earthquake(s), watch video of the Tsunami, and pray against a nuclear catastrophe similar to Chernobyl, it’s easy to forget the people who are the Japanese. Here are a few links that may help to give a name and a face to these people created in God’s image:

#1: Japanese house churches and the earthquake:

From Andrew Jones (Tall Skinny Kiwi):

One of my Japanese friends is Mika who asked for prayer on this blog when the earthquake happened. I have an update from her.

#2: Video interview as missionaries gather supplies to bring back to Japan

John and Eriko Houlette’s homepage can be found here

#3: Prayer video:

This video was (obviously) made prior to the earthquake. But it gives some direction as to how to pray for this nation so often misunderstood by the west:

#4: Prayer info for the Japanese as a people (from operation World prior to the current crisis):

Answer to prayer: Uncertainty about the future has prompted spiritual searching…

Challenge for prayer: Japan is a nation facing many crises… moral, political, economic, sociological…

#5: Japanese Churches near the Epicenter

(from Missions on the Frontline):

Please pray for the Conservative Baptist Association of Japan (CBAJ) church families in…

1. Kurihara City.  There are  two CBAJ churches there and this is nearest to the epicenter.

2. Kessenuma City.  This is the city that is in flames.  There are two CBAJ churches there.

3. Natori City.  This is where the tsunami inundated farm land.  There is a church there as well.

4. There are 30+ churches within a 60 mile radius of the epicenter.

Ken Taylor, WorldVenture Japan Field Leader, reports that local church and mission groups in Japan are organizing for coordinated responses to the overwhelming needs. In the days to come, we anticipate releasing specific details in which individuals and churches can participate in those efforts.

How to Pray for Egypt as 2 Million+ demonstrate in Cairo (and hundreds of thousands elsewhere)

As I’ve been watching the events unfold in Egypt (I’m sure you have too), the only cable news network that I know of that have correspondents on the ground is Al Jazeera. Their free English live feed is available here:  http://english.aljazeera.net/

Here’s a video that captures the passions bound up in these protests:

So how do I pray? I can continue to pray through a prayer video made a few months ago… praying for every man, woman, and child created in God’s image in the beautiful country of Egypt:

We are praying for you Egypt!

Praying For Africa…

Challenges For Prayer:

Central Africa, where ethnic and international conflicts have brutalized the populations. Tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi peoples in Rwanda and Burundi led to civil wars and periodic genocidal massacres over the past five decades. The Rwanda genocide of 1994 triggered a chain reaction of war and waves of refugees, affecting surrounding countries. The Second Congo War of 1998-2003 embroiled DRC, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Angola, Chad, Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi in a confused and bloody conflict that involved irregular militia groups as much as national armed forces – and had no real decisive winners, only losers. Eastern Congo in particular has been devastated, and the simmering of disgruntled militias and ethnicities poses a continued threat there. The heterodox and occultic Lord’s Resistance Army also plagues the population of Uganda as well as southern Sudan and northeast DRC with raids, murder, mutilation, abduction and enslavement.

Lord, we pray for righteous leaders – locally, nationally and internationally – who will act with justice and decisiveness to prevent war and conflict. We pray also that the lives of those devastated by loss and destruction might be rebuilt from the ashes.

5 Super-Simple Steps to Use Your Smartphone to Pray Daily for the Nations

saisuke google calendar sync

Font size doesn't matter, what matters is that it pops up and interrupts my day

Consistent prayer is hard work. I’ve got dozens of good competing priorities to pray for… just like you. I don’t want to neglect praying for the nations, but without being proactive, I most certainly will.

So Here’s my super-simple 5-step solution:

  1. Create a daily repeating appointment on my phone titled “Luke 10:2′s prayer” (or, “la prière de luc 10.2″)
  2. Copy the link to Operation World’s super-cool pray today feature (a different nation every day… with videos!) into the title: http://www.operationworld.org/today (so that the link becomes a clickable link when it pops up on my phone)
  3. Save as “repeat daily” for 10:02 every day (or whatever time fits your schedule, maybe 5:13 for Rev. 5:13; or 7:09 for Rev. 7:9, etc.)
  4. Every day when the alarm goes off, find an excuse to disappear for 2-5 minutes (if in a meeting or surrounded by people, a run to the bathroom could work fine)
  5. Click on the link on my phone, going directly to the “pray today” page and pray through the info as I read it.

It’s worked well for a few weeks thus far. Different job situations would require different times. But making it super simple, consistent, and in my face every day is the only way I don’t forget.

What Is An Evangelical? (An Insanely Motley Crew Difficult to Nail Down)

Evangelicalism is a motley crew that is pretty difficult to nail down. Some who claim the word I love, others who claim the word make me cringe. There are a plethora of stereotypes… some funny, some crazy, some I like, some are horrifying. Just check out flickr. I entered the word “evangelicalism” and look at the photos that turned up on the first page:

So what in the world is an evangelical? Here’s a definition from Operation world:

Evangelicals:* all who emphasize and adhere to all four of the following:

    1. The Lord Jesus Christ as the sole source of salvation through faith in Him as validated by His crucifixion and resurrection.
    2. personal faith and conversion with regeneration by the Holy Spirit.
    3. Recognition of the inspired Word of God as the ultimate basis and authority for faith and Christian living.
    4. Commitment to biblical witness, evangelism and mission that brings others to faith in Christ.

Evangelicals are largely Protestant, Independent or Anglican, but some are Catholic or Orthodox. It is one of the Transbloc movements in this book.

This definition is very close but not identical to the definition introduced in David Bebbington’s Evangelicalism in Modern Britain: A History from the 1730′s to the 1980′s as the Bebbington Quadrilateral, which offered crucicentrism, conversionism, biblicism and activism as the four qualities of evangelicalism.

Operation World

The definition of evangelicals and the statistics relating ot them are so fundamental to the contents of this book that it is important for the reader to understand the implications. It enables a measurement of the size and spectacular numerical growth of evangelical Christians over the past few decades.

Evangelicals are enumerated in Operation World as:

    1. All affiliated Christians (church members, their children, other participants of the faith community) of denominations that are definitively evangelical in theology as explained above.
    2. The proportion of the affiliated Christians in other denominations (that are not wholly evangelical in theology) who would hold evangelical views, whether WEstern in origin or otherwise.

This is a theological and not an experiential definition. It does not mean that all evangelicals as defined above are actually born-again. In many nations 10-40% of evangelicals so defined may have had a valid conversion and regularly attend church services. However, it does show how many people align themselves with churches where the gospel is being proclaimed as such.
