Flying Out To The “Together for the Gospel” Conference in Louisville, KY (Video)

I’m sitting in the Portland airport, waiting for my flight to leave as I type this.

I had a great time at my sister’s wedding in Forest Grove last Saturday, and it was good to see much extended family at my grandfather’s memorial service (Robert Karch, my father’s father) in SeaTac, WA, yesterday (Sunday).

I’m flying from Portland, Oregon, through Chicago, Midway (and so miss the psychadelic tunnel at O’Hare), to Louisville, KY. When it’s all over Thursday around noon, I’ll snag a ride back to Montréal with a group of québecker pastors.

This year, around 30 pastors from Québec will drive the 14 hour Montréal-Louisville trip to attend!

Here are some highlights from the 2008 conference:

On The Radio…

It was a privilege to be interviewed on the radio by Hans Finzel, president of World Venture, while in Colorado last January. The show, entitled “A French-Canadian and an American Story” recently recently aired.

Click here to listen to the 30-minute interview

We talk about visiting Paris, meeting Martine, my trek to Québec, its history, as well as the incredible things God is doing right now in this French-speaking Province.

Hope you are encouraged!

Video: “Lukewarm and Lovin’ It” by Francis Chan (Author of “Crazy Love”)

Martine and I recently watched this sermon together… it has had a radical impact on our prayer time together. Favorite line? “The words “spit out” come from the Hebrew word “to hcack”.”

WARNING! you may find this offensive, or your life may change radically.

Photos & Video: We’ve Moved! Here’s Our New Gathering Place:

THANK YOU FOR PRAYING FOR OUR NEW GATHERING PLACE!

It’s been a long time coming, but, (finally) we’re now meeting in an elementary school less than a block away from “Ici Par Les Arts”, our previous gathering place (last Sunday was our first meeting).

Advantages?

  • The gymnasium can hold 200-250 people (our previous place maxed out at 130).
  • More space for classes
  • Much more parking (30+ spaces in front, 30+ spaces in back… as compared to about 15 spaces total at the other place)
  • Much, much cleaner (At the other place, we often entered early Sunday morning, just to find a pile of massive art supplies, wood, etc., and a washing machine or fridge in the middle of our meeting space. Once or twice, this is okay, but it happened nearly every other week… meaning we had to get a group of people to move large furniture, then do a major floor cleaning… THEN begin setting things up. This got to be discouraging for many after nearly two years and little or no change).

The big move was Saturday. Here are some photos of the move and the first service:

Before everyone shows up

Jacob welcoming everyone to our new location

Though it felt nearly full, we still have space for another 100+ people

Standing & Singing... not too expressive yet

Here’s my first sermon in the new location, talking about “Lust after Stuff and Christmas” (in French of course):

Video: Missions in the 21st Century

Bob Roberts at the Missions One21 Conference. A lot of challenging stuff here:

A few quotes:

We get first century, but we can’t get past William Carey: Instead of standing on his shoulders we keep trying to dig him up!”

“The Great Commission is “wherever you are you are going, in every single direction”

“When the Great Commission is accomplished it will not be because of a superstar, but because the whole body of Christ gets up off her feet.”

“The Church is merely a reflexion of the disciples we are making.”

“There is no such thing as a closed country.”

“You don’t have to have a platform or lie about what you’re doing there, sneak in & sneak out. You just need to be willing to die. And that’s all right, ’cause you’re going to die anyhow!”

“We spend all kinds of time taking missionaries & trying to turn them into businessmen. Why not take businessmen and turn them into disciples?”

I found this over at Guy Muse’s M Blog

Lust…

Lust-James 4_1-10The book of James is all about a living faith that worships and calls others to worship.

James also walks through landmines our enemy uses to attack this faith.

Though they may not kill our faith completely, they may paralyze it, putting it on life-support, making us nearly useless for God’s mission.

Here are a few landmines we find in James:

  • Disobedience (James 1:19-27)
  • Discrimination/Racism (James 2:1-13)
  • Indifference (James 2:14-26)
  • Misuse of the Tongue (James 3:1-12)
  • Foolishness (James 3:13-18)
  • Lust (James 4:1-10)

The most devious and pernicious aspect of many of these landmines is that they paralyze us, sometimes for life, and often we don’t even know it!

Our faith lays in ICU, almost useless, and we think it is normal. Why? Because the faith of most christians around us is also nearly paralyzed!

A week ago I preached on the landmine of Lust at Eastmont Church in Bend, Oregon. You can listen or download by clicking a link below:

Free Book: “Memoirs of an Ordinary Pastor” -by D.A. Carson

Memoirs of an Ordinary pastor is the story of Tom Carson, a pastor and church planter in the trenches of French-Quebec for close to half a century. He was a “regular” pastor. Nothing flashy. No mega-church ministry. No one flocked to his conferences. I’ll admit it, I cried at the end.

His son, D.A. Carson, professor, theologian, and the author of dozens of theological works, still travels back to Quebec once a year to teach theology, in French, to Quebecker pastors.

Here also are a few other free pdf downloads from professor and theologian, D.A. Carson:

Around 450 free mp3′s of various teachings by Carson can be found here as well.
